It’s Cold Season. Here are Some Great Ways to Beat the Flu.

With the holiday season well in the rearview mirror, we are now fully into winter.  For some that may mean skiing or getting outside to enjoy that crisp cold air.  Winter also means cold and flu season.  Here is a quick guide on how to survive the cold and flu season with braces this winter.

Stay Hydrated

If you are not feeling well, one of the best ways to combat the oncoming cold or flu is to stay hydrated.  Being hydrated not only helps your body fight off the nasty bugs, it will also prevent your braces from sticking to the inside of your mouth.  A dry mouth also increases your risk of cavities.

Watch your Medicine

Cold and flu medications can contain high amounts of sugar, which will increased the risk of cavities.  So, make sure you are keeping your teeth very clean if you are taking any medications.

Keep Clean

Be sure to wash your hands frequently to remove all germs.  This is important especially if you are wearing elastics between your teeth.  If you have a retainer or Invisalign, you will want to be extra vigilant and thoroughly clean them multiple times per day to remove any cold or flu germs.

Get Rest

A good night’s sleep will have you on the road to recovery in no time.  Getting plenty of rest is as important as drinking lots of fluids and washing your hands.  Be sure to keep up with your daily oral hygiene routine.  Just because you are sick doesn’t mean that your brushing and flossing should stop.

Stay Healthy

To fully enjoy all that the winter months have to offer, be sure to get enough rest, wash your hands frequently, and drink plenty of fluids. By sticking to your oral hygiene routine and taking proper care of yourself, you should be able to beat the flu and cold season and stay healthy this winter.
