New Year’s Resolutions For Your Braces

As we say goodbye to the unpredictability of 2020 I’m sure everyone is looking forward to a fresh start and the beginning of 2021.

As the New Year quickly approaches, you may be thinking about ways you can improve yourself and other resolutions that you may want to set.  While you are setting your New Year’s resolutions, may I suggest a few for your braces?

Set a Schedule

For your New Year’s resolutions to be successful, you need to follow and adhere to a schedule.  In general, to be successful you need to be able to manage time and set goals.  Adhering to an overall plan and setting schedules is important to achieving those goals.  The same advice applies to your braces.

For your orthodontic treatment to be successful and for you to reach the end goal of straight teeth and a beautiful smile, you are going to need to keep to a schedule.  Now, 2020 may have gone a little off track; that is okay, just reset and carry on in 2021.

When creating a schedule for your braces, be sure to include:

  • A regular brushing routine – when you wake up, after each meal, and before bed.
  • A regular flossing routine – after each meal if possible and definitely before bed.
  • Attend all scheduled orthodontic appointments.
  • Wear elastics as you have been instructed to.
  • Repair broken wires and brackets as quickly as possible.

By keeping to a schedule, you will see quicker results and achieve your end goal of straight teeth and a gorgeous smile.

Keep your Appointments

When setting your schedule, remember to include your orthodontic appointments.  At each appointment, we will note your progress and adjust your braces accordingly.  The better care you take of your braces, the faster you will reach the end of your treatment.  If an emergency arises or something unexpected comes up, call as soon as possible to reschedule your appointment.  Do not just skip it.

Follow Instructions

Regardless of the activity or procedure, it is always a good idea to follow the instructions.  The same goes for directions that are given to you by your orthodontist.  If you are required to wear your elastics for an allotted amount of time, I highly recommend wearing them.  The closer you adhere to the instructions, the more effective and efficient the treatment will be.  If you are setting a New Year’s resolution for your braces this year, I recommend listening to and following all of our instructions.

Be Nice and Stay Positive

Regardless of what the New Year brings, keep a positive mindset.  When you are happy your brain releases endorphins that increase your immune system and make everything in your body work better. Even if you sometimes feel there is no end in sight to your orthodontic treatment, stay positive.  Everything is temporary. You will reach the finish line, you will achieve that goal of a perfect smile and straight teeth.   Be patient and above all else, be positive.

By following these simple suggestions for resolutions, you will be closer to your end goal of straight teeth and an attractive smile.  If you have any questions on these tips or would like to see what orthodontic options and treatments are right for you, please contact me today.  I look forward to seeing you soon.
